Dr Krithi Karanth (@krithi.karanth ), Director of Centre for Wildlife Studies, speaks with actor Dia Mirza (@diamirzaofficial ), champion of environmental rights, about her work and views. #connectandcollaborate Excerpts from the feature: Dr Krithi Karanth: How do you think we can increase public engagement around this discourse? Dia Mirza: The level of participation around environment-related actions is higher today than it has ever been. Which means awareness has definitely increased. I feel, in many ways, the pandemic also woke many people up to the urgency of the situation. But we also have short memories... During Holi, it was advised by state governments not to play, but despite so many Covid protocols, people were playing with ridiculous amounts of water. It draws attention to the fact that there are going to be many cities that will not have any water at all. Some places have already hit that point and, yet, people are being so reckless with resources. It makes you wonder what it will take to convert information into mainstream action. β€œ Read the complete feature in the 12th Anniversary Issue of Bazaar India. Dia Mirza Instagram – It is all the interactions with nature through my childhood that fostered a deep connection with nature. But going to the forest is what truly helped me discover nature’s magic πŸ’šπŸŒ³πŸ¦‹πŸ¦šπŸŒŠπŸ―

Dia Mirza Instagram – As #Bazaarturns12 , i was honoured to be in conversation with an advocate for the cause of environment protection, a person i deeply admire and respect on the urgent actions needed to safeguard our future. Dr Krithi Karanth (@krithi.karanth ), Director of Centre for Wildlife Studies. #connectandcollaborate

Excerpts from the feature:

Dr Krithi Karanth: When did you go from a passive appreciation for nature to becoming a strong advocate for it?

Dia Mirza: When I realised that not enough people were helping, like how you help. I was doing a show called β€˜Ganga: The Soul of India’ a few years ago…On my journey, I saw ravines of plastic in the most pristine natural areas. It opened up my mind to the gravity of the problem. Up until then, I hadn’t really seen it for what it was, how devastating and destructive it was, how it had permeated every free space in the world. Why do we not have any solution for managing our waste better? All this plastic is reaching the interior-most parts of our country, it is choking our lakes, rivers, and oceans. It has entered the food chain, polluting our air, even our soil…what is wrong with us?
