Patrick Wilson Instagram – I rarely post on social media. Partly because I’m not good at it, partly because I don’t think anyone cares what I have to say, partly because I’d rather listen to people who truly use this platform to educate/inspire/makemelaugh and partly because I’d rather audiences glean something from my work, and not from my “brand,” or my private life. But the kind of actor, a father, son, and husband I am is largely informed by the kind of human and citizen of the world I aspire to be. As June/Pride month comes to a close, I’m reminded of the struggles/achievements the LGBTQ community has endured/made. I love that I live in a diverse community where my children are friends with kids who have same sex parents, and they don’t blink an eye. A community that reinforces equality and yet knows there is work to be done. I think that’s the point of this post – there is so much work to be done. A few weeks ago my wife and I took our boys on a local mobile BLM march. (see dashboard pic) We drove through town on a rainy afternoon, a caravan of cars, a spirit of unity, a history of pain. In the backseat our sons listened to speeches by Martin Luther King Jr, and then we talked about what we would do as a family to step it up: to be thoughtful, take stock, keep trying to do better, and to listen. My children – all children – learn by example. So, we have to do the work. Lead with our hearts. Open our minds. Talk about uncomfortable things. And we have to keep doing it.
