Trick Mirror: Reflections on Self Illusion When I took this photo I felt carefree, I felt sexy, I felt curious and whimsical. I was in Joshua Tree on a solo getaway and woke up in time to catch the most splendid sunrise. Yet, as a viewer, all you see are distorted images in a mirror. I can become obsessed with books that meet me right where I am. Jia Tolentino’s “Trick Mirror” is a bold collection of essays that made me laugh, cry, and feel seen and angry all at once. “The I in Internet”, “The Cult of the Difficult Women”, and “The Story of a Generation in Seven Scams” are a few pieces she writes about. If it means anything – this book transformed me. I have a contemptuous relationship with social media. I hope we all do after watching The Social Dilemma. Yet with some space, clarity, and patience I hope to remember that it can be an elevating and useful way of connecting us.
