Often depicted in movies as savage killers, sharks actually play a vital role in keeping the seas healthy and productive. So what would happen if sharks were to disappear from our oceans? Small fish populations would explode, leading to fast declines in other species due to over-consumption and the small fish populations would eventually starve themselves. Algae and bacteria would then smother the coral reefs, so they can no longer photosynthesis. Species diversity would totally disappear. But sharks are disappearing from our oceans in massive numbers. Due to industrial fishing, 11,000-30,000 sharks are killed EVERY HOUR. Help us put a stop to this destruction.
