Cherry Valentine Instagram – What is masculinity. What is femininity, what does it mean to be either, and what does it mean to be neither? For this scene I wanted to touch on two sides of that energy, from some of my own lived experience.
Getting into the masculine look was a surreal. It actually felt a little jarring to embrace a fully masculine energy. In this scene the masculine character is watching the feminine character perform. He doesn’t like it at first, but the more comfortable she becomes, the more he embraces it and it becomes less of a performance, more of just who she is.
Growing up I felt a constant pressure to be masculine, when that is something that’s always felt a little alien to me. The male character in this scene is me, if I potentially had embraced my masculinity without question. Though we can flick between the two, feel more inclined with one or the other, it’s important to recognise these are just boundaries that society has put in place, and the very essence of what it means to be masculine or feminine is incredibly varied, not just down to what we wear.
