Dear Dr. Ananya,

When I first got to know you; the doctor in a charity hospital, the one with the biggest smile and kindest heart; the single child to Nana, by that I mean companion, friend, mother and all the roles you beautifully took on; I thought you were too good to be true.

How can someone always seek to see the better in people even when they make it really difficult to? You knew there was an Aziz Ali behind Ajju bhai even before he did, you were the one who introduced us to Aziz first.

How can someone show you the mirror, the error in your ways, the truth but do it with so much compassion that you regret ever having been the person not good enough to stand in front of her honest persistence?

How can someone love so selflessly that all they ask is for you to be the best version of you but love you for who you are anyway? Your love made Ajju Bhai, Aziz but you fell for him when he was still Ajju at the orphanage with the kids. Your eyes see the world different, no? They see the world better.

How can someone make pain look so painless? When you spoke to aai through the photo on the wall asking her to come back just for a moment, you asked her to come for baba, not you. When you told Aziz about her death, you said the pain made you a doctor. How do you take the worst thing that has happened to you and make it your strength?

But finally, you lied and I knew the kindest eyes lie too. I know you know you shouldn’t have done that. You knew you were hurting the most important people in your life. I thought to myself, you’re not too good to be true after all. And yet, you are.

That’s your magic. Even when you make a mistake, you lead with love. The more I learned about you, the more I wanted to be loved like the way you do but more than that, love the way you do. You once said,

That’s your magic. You’re the light in every life you touch. Your baba’s, Toofaan’s, every single patient’s who you treated with your big bright smile. If we were friends, I’d tell you too…
