“I’ve taped my kitchen windows with paper so that nobody can see I’m home alone. I live day and night in the dark. The plans I made for my life are dying. I’m alive but I’m not living. I’m terrified. Every time someone rings my doorbell, I think about being dragged out of my home. My neighbors know that I live alone and about my work as a women’s rights activist. My home is a prison now. Everything in me has died.” A women’s rights activist shared her words with us while hiding in her apartment in #Kabul.
Time is running out for the thousands of #Afghan women who worked as journalists, interpreters and activists as the U.S. military withdrew from #Afghanistan last week. Many of these Afghan women feel deeply threatened because for years they fought for the rights and dignity of women and girls and spoke out openly against the Taliban’s treatment of women. Many fear revenge from the Taliban and violent treatment of women and girls in Afghanistan.
Thanks to your support, TYTW has helped safely evacuate 60 high-risk female Afghan female journalists, activists and their families. We’ve worked with partners to place tens of others in safe houses throughout the country. For the 400 high-risk Afghan individuals for whom TYTW is facilitating evacuations, our team continues to work around the clock in coordination with vetted global and local partners to arrange secure transit and escort options in this rapidly deteriorating situation.
