Yesterday President Biden announced that the US would not extend the August 31st deadline for completing the US-led evacuation from Afghanistan. ⁣
⁣
This means that it will not be possible to evacuate all at-risk people to safety. It is likely that large numbers of vulnerable people will simply be left behind. ⁣
⁣
Now, alongside Taliban rule, the country faces a humanitarian crisis. The World Food Programme announced this week that millions of Afghans could face starvation due to a combination of conflict, drought and the pandemic.⁣
⁣
While evacuations may end next week, international governments can still do much to help. The challenges Afghans face are not inevitable or unavoidable. With the political will; with humane policies; with genuine acts of solidarity, the safety of more people currently in grave danger can be ensured.⁣
⁣
We MUST keep up the pressure on our politicians to ensure our countries:⁣
⁣
– Take more refugees: the UK’s pledge to take only 5,000 people over the next year must be drastically increased. ⁣
– Make it clear that there is no case at all for returning refugees to Afghanistan.⁣
– Offer sanctuary to refugees, no matter what route they take to safety. In the absence of official routes, people will always take desperate journeys to safety. Legislation like the UK’s anti-refugee ‘Nationality and Borders Bill’ which aims to penalise people taking ‘unofficial’ routes must be dropped. ⁣
– Ensure the Afghan people get the humanitarian aid they so urgently need. ⁣
