Christine Marzano Instagram – 19 yrs ago today, I was given a mask to wear, long before it became the status quo. A member of #FDNY #nycbravest saw me struggling and put a mask on my face with the instructions, given in a thick Brooklyn accent, “keep it on, alright” He then handed me a wet towel to hold above the face of the crying infant I was carrying in my arms. He covered us and held tightly to my elbow saying “I got you” whilst we ran through a downpour of noxious, chalky, debris. Debris so dense that it completely blocked out the bright, morning, September sun and rendered anything inches in front of one’s face invisible. He guided me to a stationary bus, where others covered in white dust were waiting, only to quickly turn around and run back towards the wreckage. (I eventually made it to the Battery, covered head to toe in the white dust, where complete strangers lifted me over the seawall, onto a volunteer tugboat that brought me across the water to safety in the parking lot of the Liberty Science Center in New Jersey. To this day, I have no idea if that courageous man’s story ended in the same manner as mine. To all of the heroes like that firefighter, whose face I never saw and whose name I never knew, who ran towards the destruction at #groundzero that day, and to all of the #firstresponders #family, and other #americans who continued to work/volunteer tirelessly on the #9/11pile for months after the attack. Thank you from the bottom of my heartā¤ļø To all of the #firefighters currently battling the flames on the west coast and all the first responders still on the front lines of everything going on in our country today. You are appreciated and recognized for your courage and the incredible risks you take daily in the service of others. ā¤ļøā¤ļø#neverforget #9/11 #firstresponders #brooklynstrong #nyc #begooddogood #americawearestrongtogether #unitedwestand | Posted on 11/Sep/2020 23:24:39
