I used to seriously romanticize the 60s and 70s when I was young. ⠀
Oh, to experience such a profound revolution! and to witness the birth of the civil rights movement! surely it was empowering and filled with a flower-power energy I could only imagine as electric! also Woodstock!!…what an embarrassingly white-washed view I had.⠀

Well, I got my wish. I’m in it. ⠀
And now I have a choice. ⠀
Do I want to be the person I convinced myself I would be had I lived then? Or do I want to live in a fear-lined bubble with my head in the sand; avoiding the hard questions and looking at everything but the scary truth just because it’s easier. ⠀

I want to know what my upbringing lacked. ⠀
I want to know what my Texas education kept from me. ⠀
I want to know about experiences that I myself will never go through because of the color of my skin. ⠀
⠀
If we listen to stories from those living lives different from our own and look hard at a culture we know nothing about, our minds can open, respect and understanding can be gained, and we can start to rebuild.
