Çağan Şekercioğlu Instagram – Yellow-faced #parrotlet, a beautiful, tiny (15 cm) parrot is endemic to only 4800 km2 of desert in the Marañon Valley of northern Peru, where cacti are its favorite food. Like many other parrot species, it is #threatened with #extinction due to  trapping for the cage-bird trade and habitat loss. Even though its current world population is <1000 birds, 17,000+ birds were caught in 1981-1994 and 1,481 were legally exported in 1981-1984 (Begazo 1996).40-100% of the birds die between capture and sale (Dorst 1957). An emerging threat is the building of dams on the Marañón, with four planned to be finished by the mid-2010s (Dourojeanni et al. 2009).
