We were a couple of episodes into filming our second season of United States of Al, when the Taliban began to take over Afghanistan. I watched as my Afghan friends and colleagues were forced to suffer the unimaginable; witnessing the collapse of their beloved country, while fearing for the lives of their family members who were about to be left behind. Although we were only weeks away from our premiere date, our team knew immediately that the season would need to be reworked. This meant completely rewriting and reshooting our opening episode to better mirror the unfolding catastrophe. But before our writers could even begin to process this undertaking, we first had to ensure the safety and well being of our production staff’s loved ones who were now trapped in Taliban-ruled Afghanistan. This required a full blown rescue operation, as our Afghan and Veteran colleagues worked together around the clock, in a desperate scramble to evacuate vulnerable family members before it was too late. Cut to several weeks later. Tens of thousands of Afghan refugees suddenly find themselves in a foreign country, starting their lives anew, with absolutely nothing to their names—Nothing but the clothes on their backs. But our dream is that despite the horrors that they’ve experienced, and the challenges that are sure to lie ahead, these men and women who have lost nearly everything will be filled with even a glimmer of hope as they watch their stories play out on television sets across America. They’ll know unequivocally that they are not alone, and that they belong. They’ll know that they are seen and that they matter. After decades of conflict and heartbreak, it’s finally time to come together and rebuild. We sincerely hope you’ll join us as we welcome our new neighbors Home. See you Thursday nights 👊🏽
