Ive been a stepfather for almost 7 years. My kids were 5 and 11 when we met. They’ve helped heighten my consciousness in so many ways. Yet, having a newborn has made me even more mindful because it is obvious realize my 7 month old son isn’t just observing me.

.
He’s downloading me. My tone, energy, sense of humor, sarcasm, posture, eating habits, stubbornness, and other behavioral patterns of mine are being deposited right into his database of options.

.
This has made me more conscious of how I speak to family members, friends, etc. It has made me more mindful of the energy I carry throughout the day. It has inspired an emotional sobriety that requires me to be much more vulnerable than I’m comfortable with.

.
I can no longer overlook my shortcomings. I can no longer allow myself to sweep uncomfortable matters under the rug. I can no longer lean on my own understanding, making lateral moves in my life and career. The accountability I’ve run from is now inescapable because of #Brave.

Fatherhood is teaching me to be more self accountable, more honest and far more loving than I ever thought possible.
