Lakshmi Priyaa Chandramouli Instagram – Every time I travel, I love to understand and experience the culture of that place in whatever way I can. When I was in Zanzibar, I wanted to experience a bit of their culture in some way. While I was admiring how beautiful Rachel was (the owner of the resort I stayed in before I left) she looked at my long hair and offered to do the ‘corn rows’ on them. I jumped at that offer as I had always wanted to do it. Corn rows are very rooted in African history and date far back to 3000 B.C. In Africa, braids were a way to show people who you were. They signified your tribe, your marital status, your wealth, religion, and more. It is not just a hairstyle, it’s a LOT more than that. While the plaits were getting done we exchanged stories about own countries and cultures. So much understanding, learning and mutual respect for the other culture happened during that time. A big thanks to Rachel for giving me this experience. It’s impossible to put down in words how it felt to marry the man I love in front of everybody I’ve known and loved in my life. I will write more about this week and put up more pictures but for now, I just want to put up this moment. Talk about this moment. This moment that I will be reliving every day of my life henceforth. The moment where I sat on my amma’s lap when he tied the thaali. YES. AMMA madi. This meant the world to me. This moment made everything worth it. It made me tear up. It made me happy. That smile on her face. That happiness. I am just grateful both Amma and I got to live this moment in our lives. So so thankful to everyone who made this happen.
