Antonio Marziale Instagram – After both being fully vaccinated, I’m grateful to spend time with my 97 year old grandmother. Today, as we went through boxes of old photos (some dating back to 1944), she shared stories of her life – like the time she travelled in a motor home from Ontario to San Francisco 🚍, or the time my grandfather used to watch her roller-skate at the rink before ever asking her out 🛼
Coming across photos of my own mother as a child feels like peeking into a mysterious room I’m not sure I should have access to, one that challenges my understanding of who she is, and so clearly displays the cyclical nature of life – being carried and then carrying.
My grandma and I both look at the same picture of my mother and we see two different people – she sees a daughter and I see a parent. Of course she is both, and so much more… What is clear is that we are never just one thing, but exist in relation to others, in the constant internal investigation of who we are, and as one small piece of a larger collective.
One thing this can offer is to
not get too bogged down in what someone else may or may not think of you, we are all looking at the world through our individual perspectives. We are complex, and that is sometimes frightening, but to me mainly beautiful and exciting | Posted on 26/Aug/2021 22:43:52
