Representation doesn’t mean endorsement, and complexity must not be read as justification. The discourse on cinema or any form of storytelling must be cognizant of this. When the world isn’t black and white, how can stories about it be so? How would we understand a Hashem from The Color of Paradise or a Viji from Peranbu otherwise? How would we find and recognise ourselves in art if it only projects an ideal world? There are many Shibus around us, and the easiest thing would be to condemn them as criminals and demand that they be hanged. But crimes against women will not stop unless we realise how we are culpable as a society too, and function as enablers for such behaviour.

I’m tired of saying how successful the Malayalam film industry has been this year, and this time, Minnal Murali comes to rescue the dying genre in India and has indeed come out victorious in so many aspects.
Tovino and Guru were like flesh and soul to the film, and I was surprised to witness the kinda dedication and sincerity these two displayed as actors on the screen. Guru would be one of the most memorable antagonists in Indian cinema after this film and he was absolutely lethal. Tovino’s charm and his very aura is something you can watch all day and he was totally delightful in this film as well. He is the rightful choice play a superhero and he pulled it off perfectly.
The background score was excellent. The “Uyire” track is gonna rule our playlists for a while now. The CGI was tacky at many places. But if you expect a team to create flawless CGI under an extremely tight budget, you will be disappointed. Maybe you won’t like the film due to its shoddy VFX & CGI, maybe this is the cornerstone for the entire posterity of superhero films and how the upcoming films of this genre are gonna keep doing better and better. But nonetheless, this film is gonna leave a trailblazing effect in how superhero films are gonna be made in the country.
A part of this film’s success is contributed by how they didn’t waste any more time than they did in establishing how the characters got their superpowers and Basil Joseph has all my heart for that. The simple yet powerful screenplay fastens with the audience quite naturally and allowed us to empathize for the characters. (If you thought that the name is funny, try translating your favourite Marvel superhero name in your regional language). A lot of things worked so well in this film, and I’ll gladly watch any number of sequels this team produces in the future. And I’m sure everyone who’s watched this film would agree with me on this.
