Had to fix the @nytimes headline. I need the media to call this like it is. This is DOMESTIC TERRORISM. This is a hate crime. This is White Supremacy. This needs to stop.
We need to stop pretending, as we have for centuries, that these crimes are the work of “lone wolves” or “bad individuals” the are crimes BORN OF OUR CULTURE. Of our own White Supremacist foundation. Fostered by us.
A cop who murders an unarmed Black woman isn’t just a “bad cop” he’s part of a system.
A young white male who opens fire in a salon targeting E.Asian women isn’t just an unstable individual (get that narrative out the window too), he’s part of a system.
A young while mail who murders nine Black worshipers in a church isn’t just a singular perpetrator of a hate crime, he is part of a system that fostered that thought.
None of this is to say that these terrorists are not guilty- they are in fact the most guilty and despicable. But we need to be willing and capable to acknowledge that these hate crimes are not isolated incidents.
