Lauren Joseph Instagram – I remember being 9 or 10 and asking my mom, why is my hair not as sleek as hers?
This conversation was always short lived in my household with the same answer – that my mom wanted a khoisan man so that her kids could have textured hair, as she always disliked hers – she hated the fuss people made about her silky soft hair. She always use to say, you will grow into it and love it one day.
I remember waiting for that day that I would just love my hair.
You know the game we played as kids- if you have 3 wishes what would it be?
For a very long time my wishes were always to have a big house, lots of money and long sleek hair.
Those wishes faded away in my 20’s when my hair changed into tight beautiful curls. I rocked the natural look for a while, I was finally comfortable and happy with my hair and I didn’t want to change a thing. It was healthy and it was taking shape. My wishes were now to have lots of money, be successful and to be happy.
I then started my job at Suidooster where I had to straighten my hair on a daily basis and that took a toll on my hair. I experienced heat damage, thinning of hair and my hair started breaking off.
I then returned to my 10 year old self that was unhappy with my hair, the only difference now was, I didn’t want any other type of hair. I just wanted my hair to be its best version. I treated my hair and kept it at bobs length, that helped to a certain point, however I wasn’t fully happy- because I lost my curl.
To date, I am still recovering from all the heat my hair endured.
Our hair lives and feels what we feed it, so I show my hair love and use precautionary measures to protect her.
My hair is returning to healthy again. And I’m really excited to see where we going.
My wishes are now to be happy, to live consciously and to love myself at all times and stages.
Journeys are continuous. So be patient with your journey and remember to speak positively over yourself, because your body hears you and your body deserve you to be gentle with her or him❤.
