Maya Sundarakrishnan Instagram – There’s nothing I can say that can do justice to how much this whacky nut case of a character means to me. Not only did I have SO much fun creating and bringing master Mandolin to life, there was a wonderful process that involved all the actors and the director coming together, to shape and mould this play. We jammed, we sang, we argued, we laughed, we improvised, we rehearsed into the night, dancing and singing on an open terrace – and somewhere along the way, Podu Thakitta was born.
There’s a lot of depth and a lot of unshedding of inhibitions when working together on a play. We all gave in to the process, trusted the art, and took the deep plunge. And that’s how any work is created really. With a final leap of faith. We all trusted each other, I trusted in Master Mandolin, and I loved being that persona on stage. We laughed, the audience laughed, and magic happened on stage that day.
And that’s what we live for. It’s what I live for.
Here’s to a character for the books, one that I will always keep pulling out from my hat with flourish, pride, a whole amount of whackiness and love. Certainly love.
