Thrilled to announce the Film Critics Guild-Dharamshala International Film Festival Gender Sensitivity Award, 2021

This year’s shortlist of 8 films for the FCG-Diff Gender Sensitivity Award was very strong and it was a challenge to pick just one winner.
That’s why, perhaps, after the five-member jury’s vote was counted, two films emerged as the winners of this year’s Gender Sensitivity Award:

The Film Critics Guild-Dharamshala International Film Festival Gender Sensitivity Award, 2021, goes to:

AAKHIRI BURAANSH
by director, writer, producer Yashasvi Juyal

&

CHEEPATAKADUMPA
directed by Devashish Makhija and written by Devashish Makhija, Bhumika Dube, Ipshita Chakraborty Singh

The two films are polar apart in craft, narrative style, gaze and concern.

Aakhiri Buraansh is visually sparse. Its narrative style, like the landscape it is set in, is dry, harsh, bleak.

Cheepatakadumpa, on the other hand, is a raunchy romp with more psychedelic bits and baubles than we can count.
There’s disturbing stillness in Aakhiri Buraansh, while the hectic movement of Cheepatakadumpa’s characters and camera is dizzy and distracting.

Cheepatakadumpa finds a happy ending, while Aakhiri Buraansh can’t even feign a smile.

Despite these differences, at the centre of both the films is women’s desire — their fight and flight to get what they want.

In Aakhiri Buraansh it’s women’s desire to study, earn, be independent; in Cheepatakadumpa it’s women’s desire for pleasure, orgasm.

FCG-Diff commends both the films and their filmmakers.
