Shweta Basu Prasad Instagram – Padm Vibhushan Pandit Birju Maharaj Kathak virtuoso 4 February 1938 – 17 January 2022 नमन . . I met Maharaj ji in 2011, interviewing him for my documentary film Roots about classical music and classical dance. I remember him as a gentle soul, bright eyes, childlike energy and a beautiful smile. I met him many more times after that and had wonderful conversations. . I have had the good fortune to watch him perform live. At Shanmukhanand Hall, NCPA and Jan Fest St. Xavier’s college. I remember one particular performance of his, where he matched the beat to the tune of a telephone instead of tabla and all of us in the audience watched him in awe! . He comes from a legendary family of Kathak dancers- Shambhu Maharaj and Lachhu Maharaj are his uncles. Lachchu Maharaj ji choreographed in the movies Mughal-e-Azam and Pakeeza. Pandit Birju Maharaj too, like his uncle choreographed for Hindi films like Shatranj ke khiladi by Satyajit Ray, Yash Chopra’s Dil Toh Pagal Hai and Devdas and Bajirao Mastaani by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. .
