After her parents separated, Haasan moved to Mumbai with her mother. “It was important for her to be in a place she could call home,” she explains. It’s not a bad word, change. Not for Haasan. She has welcomed it and opened herself to its myriad possibilities. And Mumbai, with its promise of infinite doorways, represented the change she desperately sought when she left Chennai.

When she debuted in the 2009 film Luck, which also starred Imran Khan and Sanjay Dutt, things shifted, and they shifted radically. “I thought I could do it but I was lost,” she admits. “I was under-prepared. I was under the assumption that simply because I come from a film background, I understood the medium. I did not. Deep down, I just wanted to make enough money to buy my music gear.”

It’s the “innocence of childhood” that Haasan always hoped she would one day return to, and with the wildly productive year that the last two years have been for – she certainly has. “From Luck to Anarchy, there were quite a few permutations and combinations I had to go through,” she says. “In 2016, I even had to take a break because I knew I had strayed too far away from whatever my purpose in life was.”
