Fiann Smithwick Instagram – This is a beautifully detailed little hybodont shark’s tooth from the Early Jurassic of Lyme Regis. I found this a few years ago when only a small part of it was showing from the rock. After a bit of very careful cleaning, it turned out to be perfect.

It’s a small tooth that only measures about a centimetre across, so would have come from a small shark. The largest sharks we know about from the Early Jurassic seas where these fossils are found are about 5-6 feet long and several spectacular compete shark fossils have been found here over the years. They weren’t the apex predators that we know in today’s oceans, that role went to the giant marine reptiles including ichthyosaurs.
