Ed Weeks Instagram – @cafetropical_la has long been my neighbourhood go-to for gorgeously satisfying sandwiches and the best coffee this side of Havana. My furry dining companion and I started with the CUBANO. Succulent roasted pork vied for saltiness with glossy ham. The pickle was long, juicy—almost tongue-like. Tangy mustard and impertinent cheese completed the ensemble, all encased in griddled panini simultaneously crispy and chewy.
At this point my dining companion wished to retire home to lick himself to sleep, but my mind was on dessert. The TRES LECHES is the finest in the city, and arrives liberally drenched in Chantilly cream, in addition to the two more mysterious milks (I think one of them is condensed). Slide 4 shows the burbling cream at the bottom of this masterpiece. A seasonal fruit compote provides welcome sourness.
All too fast, my hankering for dairy came roaring back. Salvation was found in Cafe Tropical’s signature CAFE CON LECHE. Espresso strong enough to give you a good talking to, softened by a decidedly pillowy milk froth. Finally I agreed with my dining companion that it was, indeed, time for siesta, and the two of us enjoyed a reviving walk home, punctuated by three lovely wees in the grass (him not me). | Posted on 15/Jan/2022 03:13:28
