Lee Daniels Instagram – This woman! I met her when I was 23 and was casting a very low budget film for Roger Corman. We were looking for a prison guard. I convinced her agent to have her come in to read. I was a HUGE fan and would have PAID $$ just to watch her read. She came in for the producers and gave the best performance that I’ve seen ..EVEN to this date. Still have chills remembering it. When she left, the director and producers said “she’s great but we really want a sexy blonde ”. I said “for a prison guard.”? SIDENOTE: WHAT WE WENT THROUGH BACK THEN WAS INCOMPREHENSIBLE… I ran out to the parking lot and told her that she wasn’t going to get the job. She took it graciously. I was embarrassed ..I felt the NEED to take care of her. I asked her if I could be her manager.. she asked who else I managed.. I told her no one. Dunno why but she agreed 😝! I didn’t know what I was doing but I got her some work …some good work!! Judith Jamison once told me that Paula Kelly was one of the greatest dancers of this generation! That she was here because of her…when my film precious hit Ms. Kelly called me in tears. It was the only call that mattered.
