South Africa is farming big cats for commercial trade, but the national Government doesn’t know how many are currently being kept in private facilities in the country.
There are hundreds of ‘farms’ in South Africa that actively breed four of the big cat species – tigers, lions, leopards and jaguars. The lack of effective regulations and monitoring has allowed this somewhat legal industry to flourish, while often acting as a conduit for illegal trade.
We urge South Africa to end the farming of big cats and ban their commercial trade. 2022 marks the Lunar Year of the Tiger and with it, we raise awareness about the exploitation of tigers and demand protection for all big cats.
