We see here Dr. James Marion Sims, touted as the “father of modern gynecology,” preparing to operate on slave Anarcha yet again. She endured 30 experimental surgeries, unanesthetized. As did so many others. But today we only know three names. Anarcha, Lucy and Betsey. Another example of the cost of our country’s advancement being paid with our ancestors’ bodies. I see her strength here, burning through her like fire. Grateful that there are people working right now to make sure these women are remembered. #withoutblackhistory #blackhistorymonth
