Kurtwood Smith Instagram – On this Memorial Day 2021 I honor my father Major George A. Smith, KIA during WW2. He began the war in 1942 as a fresh faced 2nd Lieutenant. He flew a C 47 transport plane dropping commandos behind the lines and sometimes equipment and supplies to troops on the move. Among the operations he participated in were the invasions of Sicily and Italy, as well as the resupplying of the D Day invasion force on June 7 ‘44. Then having been promoted to Major he participated in Operation Market Garden. He was by then the Commanding Officer of the 49th Troop Carrier Squadron. On March 24, 1945, a few weeks before the end of the war, he was killed in action leading the entire 313th Carrier Group in Operation Varsity, the crossing of the Rhine, for which he was awarded The Distinguished Service Cross. He was 22 years of age and he had never seen his son. #memorialday | Posted on 31/May/2021 22:35:02
