Michael Parr Instagram – Met some students and teachers from @oaklodgeschool on the tube and they had been protesting at Westminster to get the BSL (British sign language) act bill passed.
The BSL act bill would allow British Sign Language to be recognised as an official language. Talking to the teachers, they explained this would allow many Deaf BSL users access to public life, basic rights such as having BSL interpreters at medical appointments, having access to government broadcast and recognition for their language and culture. The kids I met were part of history and want to see BSL on the curriculum so kids across the UK can learn their amazing language.
Thankfully the bill did pass however there is still a way to go before it can be legally recognised. The next reading is on 18th March 2022 and if that passes then it will become law. This is a step in the right direction for the Deaf community but especially for these kids from @oaklodgeschool.
