A woman’s body is projected as an object of desire repeatedly through centuries by societies. The image of a submissive, helpless woman is repeated through history, across cultures. It is an image that is used to sell commercial merchandise repeatedly.
“My full lips, my youth… is it my fault? My breasts, my body… objects of desire… my fault again?”
Most abuse happens when girls are too young to realise what’s going on; Too young to stand up for themselves ….
They become the targets of abuse when they don’t have voices of their own yet and the abuser’s prey on their vulnerability.
Many abused women wonder if it was their fault… wonder if they did something wrong… if they had dressed differently, walked differently, spoken differently… would they have been able to change things?
This piece draws on many stories of abuse and retribution and how we perceive abuse as a society.
