Ahh I can’t believe I’m finally doing this!! Just a few days ago after parking in a handicap spot, the parking attendant asked me when I got out of my car, “Is that yours?” He said referring to my handicap placard. I told him it was. “Are you SURE it’s yours??” He asked again condescendingly. “YEP. I’m pretty sure.” …I was diagnosed with Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis at 15 months old. Over the last year in particular, I’ve grown incredibly sick of strangers feeling the need to make comments or assumptions about me based on my appearance. I’m tired of the rude looks people give me when I’m in a wheelchair because I “look fine” on the outside. I’m disheartened by the comments and the lack of education there is toward invisible disabilities and instead of letting these things upset me, I’ve decided to (try) to make a difference! I’m really excited to share with everyone my new website/blog where I aim to educate others and create a sense of community for other young adults battling chronic illnesses. Glowlexa.com (link in my bio!) is now live!!! I’ve met some really incredible people online and in person who’ve inspired me to speak up on these matters. Today was “injection day” (swipe to see my first dose of @cosentyxsecukinumab) Im not great with needles so I always try to plan something to look forward to on this day to cheer myself up… so today is the day I chose to launch my site! If I can make ONE person feel a little less alone, or bring awareness to RA, invisible disabilities, and chronic illness, then I’m happy. Please always keep in mind that all disabilities are different. Just because you can’t see my pain, doesn’t make it any less real. Just because I’m young doesn’t mean my body is pain free. Please consider this next time you see someone (who may look young & healthy like me!!) parking in handicap, being pushed in a wheelchair, or taking a little extra time to get to where they need to go. Now go click the link in my bio and tell me what you think!! xx
