Made a quick stop at the Lovelace Clinic when I was out in New Mexico last week! It’s definitely not what it was in the 1960s when pilots did their medical testing there, but still a neat name to see from the freeway! Randy Lovelace founded the clinic with his uncle and another colleague. He was a pioneering researcher in oxygen systems for pilots flying above 10,000 feet, work that introduced him to Jackie Cochran and beginning a life-long friendship. In the late 1950s, NASA asked him to run the medical side of astronaut screening because he was known to be thorough and discreet with a solid background in aviation medicine. Randy Lovelace plays a pretty big role in my latest book, “Fighting for Space.” He was really fascinating to learn about! #history #fightingforspace #author
