Q’orianka Kilcher Instagram – Today we celebrate Indigenous People’s day. My hope when I think of the future and all future generations is that all of us collectively as brothers and sisters sharing this beautiful world can all begin to start focusing on the things that bring us together as human beings rather then the things that divide us, then we can all truly begin to rediscover our humanity. With that in mind… I want to reflect on the history of colonization, land, language and cultural identity. I truly believe in order to have a clear understanding of your future and where you are headed, you need to have a clear understand of your history and past in order to not repeat the same mistakes. Rosemond Pettigrew, board president of Pouhana ‘O Na Wahine, a grass-roots collective of Native Hawaiian women advocating against domestic and sexual violence, said “land is considered family, and not being connected to it severs Native Hawaiians from their past.” It is sad to see the high numbers and rate of missing and murdered indigenous women, girls, two-spirit, & trans being largely ignored. We must continue to educate and raise awareness on this crisis to help amplify their voices to be heard and NEVER forgotten.
