Jona Xiao Instagram – Limitless.
Today is the 50th anniversary of Title IX, which prohibits sex-based discrimination in education and activities that are federally funded. Sports has been a heavily discussed part of this law.
Title IX wasnāt ever and never will be just about sports. However, how female athletes are treated becomes a mirror for where we are as a society in our treatment of women. Without equal funding for womenās sports, we are saying women arenāt as worthwhile to investment in as men, and that messaging permeates outside of sports.
Because of opportunities afforded to women through Title IX, Iām grateful SO many female athletes have proven beyond a doubt that we as women are capable of as much as any man.
As a female, Asian, short quarterback who plays in menās and co-ed leagues, I feel the pressure to perform every time I step on the field, because if I played poorly, it would reaffirm the false belief that āwomen canāt throwā or āwomen canāt QB.ā
Iām grateful that the sexism, racism, and sizeism Iāve faced is lessened by Title IX.
Itās an honor to join the lineage of female athletes who are encouraging girls to truly see themselves as limitless, in any arena.
