Our Marine Naturalist explained an Orca Funeral to us. As a pod travels together, the life cycle of an elder orca eventually comes to end. This isn’t sudden for the pod, as they are all emotionally intertwined. The elder orca will swim to absolute exhaustion, foregoing rest and the need to take a breath from above. Unable to swim to the surface, the pod will surround the elder and lift them to the surface for one final breath.
