In Michigan, there’s an effort to get an initiative on the ballot to protect reproductive freedom, including abortion and contraception, in the state constitution. Signatures are due July 11th. Once it’s on the ballot, Michiganders will be able to vote in November to affirm that every person has the fundamental right to reproductive freedom. This would be huge. It could be a blueprint for many other states trying to affirm abortion protections. In Kansas, we’ll need to play defense. Right now, there is a ballot measure that would amend the state Constitution to dismantle existing abortion protections. Texas and Oklahoma have already passed the harshest laws restricting access to reproductive care. If Kansas is next, that will create a huge reproductive health care desert in the middle of the country. This measure will be voted on soon—in August—so we need to act quickly to help defeat it. In Wisconsin and Pennsylvania, we have the chance to elect pro-choice, anti-filibuster Democrats to the Senate. That will get us one big step closer to codifying Roe at the federal level.
