Was illuminating learning more of Medusa’s story during this shoot with @tanvirazad02
A mortal woman, she devoted her life to priestess-hood (this included celibacy) in the name of the Goddess Athena.
Poseidon fancied Medusa and when she repeatedly rejected him, he sexually assaulted her on the steps of Athena’s temple.
Furious, Athena could not punish Poseidon as he was too powerful and punished Medusa by turning her hair to snakes and exiling her to an Island. She was also burdened with an inability to look at men without turning them to stone.
Many men/gods/ “heroes” would go on campaigns to this island to kill Medusa.
She would protect herself and annihilate these assholes by turning them to stone.
That is until Perseus found a way to kill her and he continued to use her severed head (still endowed with the turning to stone power) as a weapon against his enemies.
*the real story of injustice and female rage is what got me about this*
There are so many things that can be said about this myth.
A reflection of how our culture still victim blames is astonishing.
Also- I find something fascinating about the power of rage even in death.
Even Perseus acknowledged the power and co-opted it and used it as his new weapon. How twisted is that ? 🐍
Somehow Medusa has come to symbolize evil; a monster, a villain.
I’m grateful to have been given more context so that for me she can be a symbol of female subjugation as well as female ferocity.
