Matt Dallas Instagram – With the recent passing of the “Don’t Say Gay” bill in Florida, it has been big realization that the many people who spend their time and effort trying to limit the rights of LGBTQ citizens are much closer to achieving that goal than a lot of us realize.
If this ludicrous law went into affect in our state, my kids would be in the grade level where teachers are prohibited from talking to their students about what it means to be gay. My husband and I have attended every class holiday party, spirit run and school event since our son began preschool. One of the best things about this is that we’ve had the privilege of showing his classmates that a family with two dads can look just as normal and full of love as any other family. There have been many a discussion with his peers about why he has two dads and what it means to be gay. And every single time, no exaggeration, 100% of the time, it ends with the kids saying something to the affect of “Oh, that’s cool. It sounds fun to have two dads”. It is beyond absurd that this experience and learning opportunity should not only be taken away but made worthy of legal action. The presence in schools of LGBT families and the conversations around them have been a huge step forward in normalizing and acknowledging our existence.
I am proud to know that I have a president who fights for my family’s freedoms. That he makes it point to acknowledge and support us consistently.
