Celina Jaitly Instagram – 6 September 2018 was the culmination of an era of slavery, the slavery of human rights of the lgbtqia community in India. When I joined the fight for equality more than two decades ago I was overwhelmed by the bravery, determination and dignity of the many rainbow warriors like @laxminarayan_tripathi @iyerharish @arowkavi @princemanvendragohil @naz_foundation and many more who had spent most of their lives fighting for something that our constitution guaranteed to protect for all Indians upon its creation. I was touched by unrecorded, silent battle at the beginning which was on the verge of becoming an- in your face movement inspired by the momentum created by the lawyers of Naz foundation who petitioned for repealing of section 377 which criminalised homosexuality. Ultimately Lawyers Menaka Guruswamy and Arundhati Katju, who argued the case against Section 377 at the final showdown and all of our blood sweat and tears bore fruition on 6 sept 2018. I joined the movement hoping to play a vital role to bring visibility to the agonies of the many millions forced to live as criminals in their own nation due to laws made by foreign powers who colonised us for over two centuries. I am so grateful I was able to use my voice and platform for serving the rainbow, for something valuable like human rights and when I turn back and look at my life journey it feels so blessed to find myself on the right side of history. Activism is not always rewarding, the price is high both personally and financially, but when you look back on your journey it feels wonderful to find yourself in the chapter of your country’s history and how you contributed to faith, hope and everything that the rainbow is made of.
