We weren’t finding worms in our apples, a canary long flew from that crimson coal mine. It was incisors gnawing at carnuba wax and seeds surely spit out, pinging against hot asphalt for fear of arsenic, and apples with a hole, even a hint of an inhabitant, were thrown in the bin by a gloved and gray haired lady.
So why did I love the joke?
Maybe it hints at a life hidden deep within the flesh, beneath the fruit, where nectar is supposed to live, that congealed substance, that amber resin. Instead there is something waiting to be born, there’s flowers growing from your neck, there’s a vining heliotrope climbing deep beneath your skin, in the places where time is meant to be sticky and sweet, there’s actually something more. A bitterness, a slimy truth. Something alive//
We are still in here. Behind the scarlet skin. Growing, thriving, waiting for you to wake up and
take the bite. 🪱
