King Canute famously put his throne in the sea and commanded the tide to halt – obviously it did’nt. He wanted to show that no king is above god: ‘Let all men know how empty and worthless is the power of kings, for there is none worthy of the name, but He whom heaven, earth, and sea obey by eternal laws’… What a character. Imagine inviting someone like that to your summer BBQ… You know it will be intense and potentially unforgettable.
