James Wan Instagram – Alright, some of you have told me my suggestions may be a bit too “old and obscure”, and have asked for more contemporary ones.
I’m trying to stay away from 80s horror (with its treasure trove of pop, schlock and classics) because it’s such an obvious period to dip into and we all have our own favorites, but it’s hard to talk horror without referencing one of the greatest periods of the genre. So…
Coming up are some of mine, but are again, not overtly popular outside of the horror-fandom world.
First up, WARLOCK (1989).
A supernatural Terminator. Two sworn enemies traveling forward in time to contemporary time (late 80s) — one is an evil warlock searching for the power to undo creation, and the other is the witch hunter hunting him. It’s such a fun, underrated gem with terrific performances from Julian Sands as the Warlock and Richard E. Grant as the hunter. You can feel the genre talent of the filmmakers (in David Twohy’s script and Steve Miner’s direction).
