I needed more booze, and the bar was charging four and a half bucks a bottle. Buck came with me, who we had just met inside and who you line-danced with twice. He was a big boy and I wasn’t about to make him mad. But, ultimately, it felt like it was the night that took over: half a moon pulsing up high, the rumble and hiss of 18 wheelers pulling in, and that one lone Mexican waiting outside the double doors of the food mart. It was Buck who was following me, when I thought it’d be you. He was along because he knew something was going down; that, and the free drink, I’m sure. I looked back at you as we were walking away knowing you were staying, and I couldn’t help but focus on the cigarette’s cherry light reflecting off your pupils when you took a drag. When you got a good thing going, I know better than to strip you away from it. “Go on” was all you said, and you smiled that smile we’ve gone to jail for more times than I want to remember.
