We somehow believe tragedy won’t strike us. You have to believe this or you’d be paralyzed by fear and hiding in a bunker.
You wake up, drop your kids off, you assume you’ll see them later or they’ll see you. Until it ends. In this case a woman lost her husband at 43 to a heart attack. (Listen to the episode, it’s moving and insightful in too many ways.)
Today with a school shooting, people personalize the experience. It’s a jolting reminder that no, you might not ever see your kids again. Or they might not ever see you. Due to accident of chance or your own health and lifestyle choices.
How do you square the circle of living optimistically while understanding this life will always be seen as too short, no matter when it ends? There’s no solution for everyone, although a good practice is to make that call. Get in touch with that person you have been putting off.
