As were the times, Baba was the breadwinner, but he also shopped for everything in the kitchen, was equally skilled at making crumb fried prawn cutlets as he was at making mutton chaanp, the smell of which would have us pleading an hour before it was ready. He spent relatively astonishing amounts of money on encyclopaedia for his kids (which we passed over for the latest Madonna CD liner notes), drove me to cricket matches two cracks after dawn, fed us with his hands till we were ridiculously old (think braces and bicycles), and told us tales of mischief from his childhood of forests and bridges. But most of all I remember him letting us sleep past the alarm, then lightly massaging us every morning so we would not wake but slowly unfurl, and slide uncomplainingly into a new school day. @anubose189
