Allie Gonino Instagram – I had the honor of attending the German premiere of @lin_manuel ‘s #Hamilton in Hamburg last Thursday. Somehow, despite that I couldn’t understand much of what anyone was singing, I was even more moved than I had been after seeing it in New York before the pandemic. The performances, choreography, stage direction, translations, and live band were all so immaculate. This was my first live theater performance to attend since the lockdown – since my last time seeing ‘Hamilton’ – and the passion, joy, and release of years of anticipation, and hope were palpable. Knowing the artists had waited two years to give this performance, to debut a controversial and critically acclaimed work of art, in an entirely different language and country of origin – knowing how long so many of us felt suspended in time, not knowing the future of live theater – made this moment all the more emotionally satisfying.
