Cecily Strong Instagram – There are two pandemics hitting one community in the US hardest. And the best way we have to combat one means possibly exacerbating the other. It is devastatingly unfair and heartbreaking. But just as we have done our part as citizens to try to flatten the curve of covid, it is time for our leaders to do their part and not only openly acknowledge but also introduce real legislation to fix the myriad of systems in place that have enabled the oppression of black and brown Americans for years. Whether or not you believe the racism is intentional (which is really not up for debate on my Instagram ✌🏼), the fact of the matter is that all the statistics and numbers across the board clearly show massive inequality that’s not only made life in America exponentially more difficult but also actively dangerous and fatal for black people. (And acknowledging the oppression of black and brown Americans does not take away from the suffering and/or difficulties for any other group. They are not mutually exclusive and should not be used as weapons against each other.)
