Once the shock subsided after hearing of my nomination, I started to think about what I wanted to wear to the Emmy’s.
I have always been inspired by the Hollywood glamour of the 50’s, particularly Grace Kelly and her longtime collaboration with costume designer Edith Head. Not just for her film roles but for on the red carpet. And that got me thinking…
I am currently in the middle of filming season 3 of ‘The Great’ with our mega costume designer, Sharon Long and her miraculous team of dressmakers. Sharon was nominated the same day I was and went on to WIN Outstanding Period Costumes at the Creative Arts Emmys just a week ago. I had no clue she was going to win at the time, but it makes this story that much sweeter.
I asked Sharon if she would design my dress for the Emmy red carpet and asked Catherine Shaw if she would make it. Catherine has made every costume by hand that I have worn over the course of seasons 2 and 3 of the show. We have always found it very fitting that the woman who makes Catherine the Great’s clothes is also named Catherine!
Catherine, Sharon, and I had secret fittings after work days to create this gem.
We all decided classic glamour never goes out of style and I think Sharon and Catherine were ecstatic to make such a different design compared to the 18th century garments we wear on the show!
So when I got asked, “Elle, What are you wearing tonight!?”
I said, “Oh, this? This is Sharon Long couture😘”
Also a special shout-out to my dresser, Nina. Literally can not get dressed without her. Layer by layer every morning, she yanks me into my corset and sews me into my costumes. Her attention to detail and gift for organization is inspiring. She even has a hand chart that she lays out each day, so I know which finger to put my rings on. Wish you could have flown to LA to dress me, but I’ll see you in a couple days to get dressed once again in my insanely cramped trailer. How on earth do we manage to fit those dresses in there!!!??! 🤣🤣

I can’t put into words what “The Great” means to me. To be recognized for playing Catherine, a character who has shaped me personally in so many ways, is a moment I will never forget. And Jean, Quinta, Rachel, Kaley, and Issa, sharing this nomination with you makes it all the more meaningful. We are on set filming season 3 right now and my partner in comedy, Nicholas Hoult broke the news to me with the crew and my fellow cast mates by my side. Wouldn’t have wanted it any other way! Getting to celebrate alongside him, Fran di Mottola, the magician production designer who builds our transportive sets, and Sharon Long, our costume designer who adorns us in her glorious creations is truly special. But it all would be meaningless without Tony McNamara’s vision. His words and imagination are what bring us to work every day and push us to “greater” heights. HUZZAH ! Thank you to the television academy for this unbelievable honor!
