Orphaned at 5, I had to begin working early–I’d work on farms. Then at 11, I was married off to an alcoholic. Soon after the wedding, he started abusing me–he’d come home drunk and beat me up for the most trivial reasons like less salt in food. I don’t remember a single day when I went to bed without crying. But then we had kids–2 daughters and a son. They kept me going. Years went by, and one day my husband just left… And if that shock wasn’t enough, I got to know he had left us knee deep in debt. I’m not sure what I felt more – anger or fright. With all the responsibilities on my shoulder, I worked twice as hard – two farms in a day. Still, I could barely make ends meet.
Then one day, my nephew, a tech savvy, randomly asked me if he could feature me on his online show ‘My Village Show’. I said ‘Why not, but what will I have to do?’ He smiled and said, ‘Nothing special Gangavva, just be yourself’.
So that’s what I did and you won’t believe it, but I shot to fame overnight! At 55, I was getting “recognised”. People loved the way I talked. Comments like, ‘You are so funny, Gangavva,’ made me smile. Then on, it became a norm – every alternate day, I would make these funny videos, and my kids also supported me a lot.
Little by little my confidence increased with each video and I became a known face. It reached a point that I didn’t have to work at the farm anymore. And then one day, a director approached me to star in a Telugu movie. I took it! And ever since, I haven’t looked back.
So far, I have worked in 5 movies, participated in Bigg Boss and have also worked in some regional TV channels. It has been a very beautiful journey! I was able to come out of debt, repay long-standing loans, buy land for my family and even build my own house.
These 5 years have completely turned my life around. Even I didn’t know I had it in me, you know? But I trusted my gut and took a leap of faith. And this woman that you see, the one who was orphaned at 5 and who was abused for the major part of her life, is today, at 60, the main character of this film called life!” #YehMeraIndia #IndiaAt75
