Nicole Seah Instagram – Met a diverse bunch of Singaporeans at our rainy but cool Hammer Outreach in Tampines. One encounter was a family of Singapore citizens who were originally from the Philippines – An animated and charming couple as they shared how they raised six children (!!!). My heartiest respect to them for being able to do so as it takes a village, alongside much dedicated time and effort to build a family. On the other flip side was another family, with a spouse also originally from the Philippines, who lamented that they had been living in Singapore for twenty years and applying for PR, but with repeated rejection with no reason provided. The Workers’ Party has previously spoken up on granting citizenship to foreign spouses of Singaporeans, especially pertinent when they have sunk roots in the country and wish to build a life for their children here. Couples with a Singaporean and foreign spouse are exempted from certain rules that would otherwise apply to SC/PR families such as qualifying for BTO, healthcare subsidies or even receiving employer CPF contributions. While these measures might seem like a negligible difference, they do add up as increasing costs on top of an already high cost of living for such families.
Nicole Seah Instagram – Back at Simei with @fooseckguan.sg and @abdulshariff.sg for our house visits this week. Resident T introduced us to her two beautiful daughters, one of whom was named Rebekah, my middle name (albeit the non-biblical spelling). T made the pivot from being a salaried employee to being a business owner during covid, and set up an online pharmacy selling TCM herbs. She shared that she started this business with a passion to modernise TCM medication and allow people to have easy access to it via online selling platforms. I believe that when people embark on a passion project with a strong personal motivation that aligns nicely with their ethos and values, work will feel less like work, and there will be greater meaning in knowing that you are doing something to leave the world in a better place. Separately she also shared that her husband runs a tuition business that only accepts students with low marks, because they want to ensure that students with academic challenges are given more of a fighting chance to turn around their scores. She also offered tuition slots to our food distribution recipients if the need arises. Very grateful for her generosity and kind gesture. It was an uplifting conversation and one that left the volunteers and myself inspired. I will be away for the next two weeks so won’t be able to join on outreach activities. Thankful to Kenneth, Shariff and our dedicated team for holding the fort in the meantime. Simei, Singapore
